5-15 Report for Week 2

  • The cult of Hu Tianbo
  • The foot binding section
  • “Betraying Big Brother: The Feminist Awakening in China”

I was drawn to these three topics for many reasons. Last year, I took a class called Queer China with Dr. Miller, where I learned all about the LGBT presence throughout Chinese history. Going into this class, I wanted to learn more about this topics, specifically around women and women’s rights, which I believe tie into LGBT presences in China as well. I was interested in Hu Tianbo because of the queerness that is associated with it, as it is a spirit who manages love between homosexual people. I was also very interested in women’s rights and expectations, and had heard about foot binding in passing. However, I still do not know all that much about it except that it was expected of for women to bind their feet to make them small. I do not know the significance or meaning of this and would love to learn more. Lastly, I would love to learn about the feminist movement in China, specifically how it has grown and changed over time.

Our first workshop was very telling and fun. I enjoyed talking with everyone and coming up with ideas, and feel like it will be an enjoyable experience to design my own portfolio and assignments. I know that as a student, I do not work well with new platforms, especially this one that I am working with now. I do not do well with change. Once I have a platform that I have learned, it is hard for me to switch to a different one, so I will most likely stick to things I know how to use already.
